Crop update - grain crop better than anticipated but balance tight | Grain and Feed | London | United Kingdom EU-27 | 11/14/2011

With Member States starting to publish provisional harvest estimates for 2011, the total MY2011/12 EU27 grain crop is now expected to reach 282.5 MMT, 2.5 MMT above previous expectations. Within this total, wheat production is put at 137.5 MMT, barley at 52 MMT and corn at 62 MMT. The wheat crop is just over 1 MMT above previous estimates, largely due to reduced concerns over the French harvest, while the record corn number is also 1 MMT above previous expectations. The focus is now turning to...

Dairy, Milk, Fluid, Dairy, Cheese, Dairy, Butter, Dairy, Milk, Nonfat Dry, Dairy, Dry Whole Milk Powder | 2011 | Dairy and Products | Warsaw | EU-27 | 10/19/2011
In 2011, EU-27 milk production is expected to increase in response to domestic and international demand. In 2012, EU-27 raw milk output is forecast to continue to grow albeit at a smaller level than in 2011. Rising costs of production, limited consumption in countries struggling under economic hardship and the uncertain world market situation cloud the view for longer-term production planning. The raw milk output increase is expected to result in higher production of dairy products, mainly ha...

EU-27 Annual 2011 | Livestock and Products | The Hague | EU-27 | 9/6/2011
During 2010 – 2011, the EU cattle herd is forecast to shrink as subsidies are phased out and input costs rise. Also EU swine inventories are expected to fall, as a large number of farmers are anticipated to stop before the new environmental and animal welfare legislation will be enforced in January 2013. During 2010 and the first half of 2011, the EU livestock sector has benefitted from increased demand for beef from mainly Turkey, and for pork from mainly South Korea. Further growth in expor...

Annual | Biotechnology and Other New Production Technologies | Paris | EU-27 | 8/31/2011
Member States (MS) address biotechnology in multiple ways both in terms of policy and marketing, due to the diversity of industry needs and public opinions within the MS. Thus, four categories of MS can be identified: (1) countries producing biotech crops, (2) MS ready for adoption, (3) MS with restrictive legislation and hostile opinion but supportive farmers and industry, and (4) MS with the strongest opposition. The European Union (EU) policy on biotech crop cultivation is based on a regula...

France and Biotechnology - Changing Perspectives | Paris | France | 8/18/2011
France is famous for its hostility for plant biotechnology, with a national ban on genetically-engineered corn imposed since 2008, and the over-cautiousness of regulatory authorities which generally consider more the potential risks than the recognized benefits of the technology. However, France remains a major importer of biotech products to feed livestock and poultry, and both public and private research is moving forward in plant biotechnology. Moreover, the recent Agricultural Ministerial ...

Paris - Innovation and Plant Biotechnology to Address Food Security | Paris | France | 7/18/2011
Research and innovation in agriculture to address food security challenges were top priorities set by the G20 agricultural ministerial declaration agreed on in Paris on June 23, 2011, under the French Presidency of the G20.  These were all in line with the messages of two meetings that took place in the Paris a few days earlier: the June 14 seminar organized by FAS/Paris on "Agricultural Innovation for Achieving Food Security" and the "Agricultural Knowledge Systems: Responding to Global Food Se...

EU-27 Annual Biofuels Report | The Hague | EU-27 | 6/29/2011
Despite EU consumption of biofuels steadily increased, and the use of fossil fuels stagnated, the EU did not achieve its Directive 2003/30 indicative target for blending in 2010.  During 2006 - 2008, the EU Member States’ mandates for blending and the relative high crude oil prices spurred the domestic use and production of biofuels.  Since 2007, however, competitive imports of biofuels have been deteriorating domestic producer margins.  Despite the effort of the EC to regulate these imports, th...

| France facing most severe drought in 50 years | Paris | France | 6/6/2011
The March – May period was exceptionally dry for most regions, except Corsica and the French Riviera, and also warmer than usual.  According to Météo France, the current pattern is reminiscent of the 1976 and 2003 situations where droughts drastically affected agriculture.  Some analysts are forecasting 2011 as both the driest and warmest year in the past 50 years.  The situation has led authorities to restrict the use of water, including irrigation for agriculture.  The drought is threatening t...

| Chief USDA Scientist Gets Scientific View of Biotechnology in France | Paris | France | 5/25/2011
Despite its reputation as an anti-biotechnology country, there are many in France considering plant biotechnology as a tool to address global needs and challenges in terms of climate change, food security, energy needs, and sustainable agriculture.  The recent visit of Dr. Roger Beachy, Director of USDA’s National Institute for Agriculture (NIFA), was an opportunity to let the “quiet ones” express themselves.  From collaboration between national French and U.S. national research institutes, to p...
