Cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) (mad cow disease) have been reported in cattle in France since 1991. However the number of BSE has been gradually declining since 2001.
Each animal entering the food chain is tested for BSE before slaughter to avoid transmission of the Creutzfeldt Jakob disease to humans.
In January 2005, French veterinary authorities reported that the decrease in the number of BSE cases in France was accelerating and suggested the disease could be eradicated in five years.
